A putback is when a player gets a rebound from the opponent’s board and completes the opportunity without dribbling or passing. Many refer to putback as the clearance from the offensive rebound that is successfully obtained. Below is a video on how to practice putback basketball by HowCast.

While Tip In is a situation when the ball is slightly out of the ring immediately assisted with a tip using one hand to finish. In the Tip In, the ball is not fully held to complete the opportunity, but only brushes off the ball that comes out so that it enters the basketball hoop. The difference between the two is just possession of the ball. Putback is a real offensive rebound, while Tip In can be categorized as a full second chance. Below i provide a training tutorial on how to do Tip-In Basketball from HowCast channel youtube.

How to Do a Basketball Putback and Tip In ?

  1. In all rebounding techniques, the first thing to master is positioning. Opponent defenders generally perform box-out actions in the restricted area to avoid the rebound ball being seized by the opponent. However, with clever moves, offensive players, especially forwards and bigman, can find momentum to take the putback ball and tip it in
  2. Leaping, jumping technique is needed to win the rebound duel. Players with good leaping abilities will find it easier to win rebounds even though they are outsized.
  3. Off Ball Movement, a movement that utilizes screens created by other players can avoid a player from guarding and boxing out opponents. Continuing to move actively in the restricted area is the key to winning this battle.
  4. Execution, when you get a chance to do a putback and tip in, do it properly and correctly. If the bouncing ball is not far from the basketball hoop, then tipping in will be the easiest option. Meanwhile, if the ball bounces a little far, a Putback slam or Putback layup can be the best option.

The second chance often determines the victory in basketball matches because it means that a team can still maintain possession even though the shooting from the player on the first chance fails. Learning and mastering putback and tip-in skills will be very beneficial for a team that have passionate for victory.
